NATURAL BUILDING BRANDING - MUDBLOOD BUILDS

Natural building branding inspired by hand-sculpted, earth-based craft.

Based in Denver, CO, Mudblood Builds is a leading natural building company renowned for earth-based installations that blend artistry with architectural finesse. This natural building branding project called for a bold, adaptable block print style logo — one that would hold up equally well as solid black or reversed white-on-black, since the client wanted a mark strong enough to work as a circular profile image across every platform.

The inspiration came directly from the client’s own craft: a sculpted double-spiral motif carved into one of Mudblood Builds’ ovens. Translating that sculptural, hand-carved form into a balanced circular mark took real iteration — getting the positive and negative space to read as equally weighted, and the line thickness neither too thin nor too heavy, so the flow of the design would capture the same handmade quality as the oven that inspired it.

The result mirrors the hand-sculpted beauty of Mudblood Builds’ own creations: meticulously crafted typography harmonizes with the organic icon, encapsulating the company’s dedication to marrying art and architecture in perfect synergy.

This project drew directly on my own hands-on background in earthen building — I taught a Clay Oven course for over five years at Yestermorrow Design/Build School in Vermont, giving me a real, practical understanding of the craft behind Mudblood Builds’ work, not just its visual appeal.

"Will went above and beyond designing our logo. He is adept at moving between mediums, and flexible enough to work with the laundry list of suggestions and edits I brought to the project. Our finished logo has given us the final piece to confidently brand our company. I am very happy with Will's work and highly recommend him!"

What's involved in branding a natural building company?

Capturing craft that’s inherently hand-made and irregular in a mark that still reads as clean and professional, the tension between organic materials and polished branding is usually the whole design challenge.

A bold, single-color block print style works equally well as solid black or reversed white-on-black, giving Mudblood Builds a mark flexible enough for everything from a circular profile photo to printed signage — while still feeling hand-carved rather than digitally sterile.

Yes — having taught earthen oven-building myself, I understood the actual process behind Mudblood Builds’ work, not just its finished appearance, which shaped how the mark was developed.
